Organic Coffee Beans

organic coffee beansWhat are Organic Coffee Beans?

We are all becoming more familiar with the term “organic”.  This means that the “organic coffee beans” are grown without the use of herbicides and pesticides.

Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, right behind oil. It is estimated that coffee products reach every home, in some form or another, in the world. Think about how many coffee beans are consumed. Most of the coffee fruit in the world is sprayed with chemicals which are meant to kill insects. Could it be we are slowly killing ourselves with a slow poison unless of course we are buying organic coffee beans.

There must be some truth to that statement and that is why the organic industry is growing at astronautical rate of 22% per year.

Organic  also includes the practices of the farm such as composting, recycling and proper land care. A land buffer is needed between a traditional grown crop and the organic coffee beans. Proper land management allows the land to stay fertile for generations so new land does not have to be cleared of trees. This is another green feature of organic coffee beans. Saving the rain forest.

To grow organic coffee beans a system needs to be set up for natural pest control along with erosion control. Many farmers grow their coffee in the shade of trees. These trees protect the soil, conserve soil and attract birds which in turn eat the insects.

Another term that is coming into use is “Sustainable Agriculture”.  There is no strict definition of this term but it is generally considered to mean that you farm and grow your crops in a way that is kind to the environment and its people.

A sustainable farmer who grows organic coffee beans implements practices to minimize pollution, looks for ways to care for the environment and employees.

Samples of sustainable farming would be to reuse the coffee husks as a heating fuel instead of cutting down trees. Use the old coffee husks as a compost around trees.  Implement practices to conserve water and use shade trees to attract birds. The farmer also has the choice to grow organic coffee beans.

Interested in organic coffee then I strongly recommend Cross Country Cafe. It has a unique organic coffee bean and blends of coffee that are their own.
